New Opposition leader Kevin Rudd has won support for a big make over of his front bench, demanding talent come before political allegiance.
Expected to win promotion include Queensland's Craig Emerson and NSW MP Chris Bowen along with high-profile former rock star Peter Garrett and former Keating Minister, Bob McMullan.
But the show of strength from Mr Rudd has already caused a sharp reaction with Queensland Unionist Bill Ludwig rubbishing fellow Queenslander, Mr Emerson.
The Australian reported Mr Ludwig:"He (Mr Emerson) was there before (on the front bench) and he was useless, and I wouldn't imagine that anything has changed," Mr Ludwig said.
The head of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, Joe de Bruyn, is also reported to be upset at the demotion of Senator Hurley, who is aligned with the SDA in South Australia.
Wayne Swan is expected to remain shadow Treasurer and new Deputy, Julia Gillard, to be Industrial Relations spokesperson.
The caucus meets today to vote for the front bench.
